Gender Politics in Tunisia and Libya (Arabic)

To mark the occasion os Women’s Month, we will be holding this round table discussion on Tuesday, March 9, with the participation of Begoña Lasagabaster, the representative of UN-Women for Tunisia and Libya; Yosra Fraoues, the president of the Tunisian Association of Democratic Women, and Libyan activist Wafia Saifalnasr, who has been very involved in her country’s political life in recent times. As in the rest of the world, gender equality in the Arab world is far from being achieved both for legal reasons and because of the important role played by customs and traditions which relegate women in many respects compared with men. However, the situation is not exactly the same in all Arab countries. Whilst in some countries little or very little progress has been made on the path towards achieving equality, in others quite a bit of encouraging progress has been made. In order to discuss this important issue, as part of Women’s Month, Casa Árabe is organizing a round table discussion specifically to analyze the situation in Tunisia, one of the most advanced countries in terms of gender equality, and in Libya, a country mired in a lengthy armed conflict which has had an especially strong impact on the situation of women. Participating in the round table will be Begoña Lasagabaster, the representative of UN-Women for Tunisia and Libya; Yosra Fraoues, the president of the Tunisian Association of Democratic Women, and Libyan activist Wafia Saifalnasr, who has been very involved in her country’s political life in recent times. Yosra Fraoues is a lawyer and human rights activist. She is the president of the Tunisian Association of Democratic Women and delegate of the International Federation for Human Rights in Tunisia. She has taken part as a legal expert in the drafting of texts on the democratic transition, as well as in the drafting of the Law against violence against women approved in 2017. She is also a trainer specialized in the field of human rights in general, and of women's rights in particular. She is the author and co-author of books on the subject equality. Begoña Lassgabaster is Country Representative UN Women Libya and Tunisia. With over 20 years of professional experience, she was a member of the Spanish parliament for 12 years, followed by a stint at the European Parliament. Lasagabaster has helped establish more than 150 laws in areas of women's rights, gender equality law, elimination of violence against women, international development and cooperation, justice, and economic and social rights. Wafia A. Saifalnasr is a Libyan political activist. She was a founding member of the Libyan platform Women for peace. She holds a Master's Degree in Public Administration and a Master in Software Engineering. She was an advisor to former Libyan Prime Minister Ali Zidan. Seis ingredientes para cambiar el mundo

Casa Árabe organizó el 19 de marzo de 2018 en Madrid esta conferencia a cargo de la chef educadora y emprendedora Najat Kaanache, en colaboración con el VIII Encuentro Mujeres que transforman el mundo. Junto a Kaanache, participó en la conferencia Alicia Gómez Montano, periodista española y profesora universitaria. Presentó Nuria Medina, coordinadora de Cultura de Casa Árabe. La ex directora durante ocho años de “Informe Semanal”, Alicia Gómez Montano, moderó el diálogo con la chef de origen marroquí más destacada del mundo, Najat Kaanache, una emprendedora inspiradora y defensora de los derechos de la mujer que ha materializado sus sueños y, centrada en la idea de que cada reto para cambiar el mundo puede ser superado mediante el uso de seis ingredientes principales, ha creado una iniciativa solidaria para proteger el origen de los productos. Najat Kaanache. Chef humanitaria, educadora y emprendedora. Nacida en San Sebastián de familia marroquí. Después de estudiar cine y teatro en Londres, decide formarse como cocinera y trabaja en los mejores restaurantes del mundo (Noma, Bulli, etc.). Investigadora y creadora gastronómica, ideó el proyecto Sixingredients partiendo de la idea de que se requieren seis ingredientes para cambiar el mundo: nuestros cinco sentidos y la conciencia. Un proyecto de ecología y gastronomía transformadora, a través del concepto “Guardianes de la comunidad”, que lidera desde su restaurante Nur en Fez (Marruecos). Alicia Gómez Montano (Madrid, España) doctora en Ciencias de la Información por la Universidad Complutense de Madrid y profesora de periodismo televisivo en diversos másteres. Inició su carrera profesional en la radio. En 2012 se publicó el libro 'Por una mirada ética. Conversaciones con Alicia Gómez Montano', en el que la periodista relata su trayectoria profesional desde sus inicios en Radio Nacional de España hasta su labor como directora en Informe Semanal. En noviembre de 2017 fue elegida vicepresidenta de la sección española Reporteros Sin Fronteras sustituyendo a Alfonso Armada que asumió la presidencia de la organización. Talk with the Emirati director Nujoom Alghanem (ARABIC)

06/02/2017. Nujoom Alghamen met with the public on the occasion of this screening of her documentary "Nearby Sky" (Samma Qarribah)(United Arab Emirates, 2014, 95 min.). The screening was part of the film series "New filmmakers from the United Arab Emirates", curated by Alejandra Val Cubero and organized by Casa Árabe, which introduces a new generation of directors who have come onto the scene over the last decade. About "Nearby Sky" (Samma Qarribah)(United Arab Emirates, 2014, 95 min.). Fatima Alhameli was the first Emirati women who owns camels to get her camel signed up for a contest and take part in camel auctions in the United Arab Emirates. Despite all the difficulties and challenges encountered when attempting to demonstrate that she could compete in one of the most male-dominated fields, Fatima’s desire to win a race or contest remains the only way to make up for her failures and overcome them. Fatima’s story is reflected in a unique way in this film, which shows the path she has chosen and the challenges she has faced both socially and personally. Teatro: "Tagine, una historia entre fogones..." [Extracto]

Casa Árabe organizó el 10 de marzo de 2019 esta representación teatral en el marco del Festival Ellas Crean. Se trata de un monólogo gastronómico interpretado por la actriz Farah Hamed y ganador del premio a la mejor representación en el 14º Certamen de Teatro por la Igualdad "Mariana Pineda". Amal (Farah Hamed) es cocinera en un restaurante marroquí llamado "Mediterráneo" y nos muestra cómo hacer un "tagine" según la receta que le enseñó su abuela. Mientras cocina, al más puro estilo de Sherezade, nos va enredando en su historia personal. Su cocina es una bahía acogedora del Mediterráneo donde resuenan músicas, bailes, historias, poemas y canciones de todas las culturas que la bañan. Amal adora el encuentro con la gente y compartir sus experiencias y sus platos… Farah Hamed Actriz y directora. Se forma en el estudio para el actor Nancy Tuñón en Barcelona. Nominada al Goya como Mejor Actriz Revelación 2009 por Retorno a Hansala de Chus Gutiérrez. Ha trabajado en películas como "Los últimos Días", "La ignorancia de la sangre" y también ha participado en series como "Aída", "Amar en tiempos revueltos", "Física o Química" y "Hospital Central", entre otras. Layla Hamed Alí Licenciada en Sociología y Máster en Estudios Migratorios, Desarrollo e Intervención Social por la Universidad de Granada y formada como técnico de sonido en la Escuela Pública de Formación Cultural de Andalucía. Como técnico de sonido ha trabajado como ayudante en la Sala Plantabaja y en la Sala Boogaclub de Granada, sonorizando conciertos y jam sesión. "Tagine, una historia entre fogones…" es un monólogo gastronómico. The role of civil society and women in Syria’s reconstruction

Thinking about the Syrian crisis does not mean just talking about the conflict right now, but also what will happen “the day after.” The war has caused hundreds of thousands of victims, along with millions of internally displaced persons and refugees. When the violence eventually comes to an end and the country’s reconstruction begins, the Syrian people will need new skills to help the transition process move forward. In June 2014, the European Union launched the Tahdir Initiative (“tahdir” meaning “preparation” in Arabic) with the general objective of supporting committed Syrians in different arenas with the process of transition towards a peaceful, democratic, inclusive new Syria. Tahdir consists of educational programs, professional internships, skill-building seminars, non-academic scholarships and travel for study. At this first presentation, the highlight will be placed on the role of women and the drafting of an inclusive constitution.
