Taking place on November 18 at the Casa Árabe headquarters in Madrid is the seventh conference in the Aula Árabe Universitaria program, given by Professor Nida Alahmad (University of Edinburgh). Over the past few decades, three themes—the state, oil, and war—have shaped both Iraqi politics and Iraqi studies. These themes emerge from Iraq’s modern history and its representation in academia. Academic work on Iraq witnessed a number of shifts that can be traced to two interrelated factors: access to primary source material, and the political context of the time. This lecture will show how the state, oil, and war are interrelated themes rather than definitively bound categories that determine certain effects on Iraq’s political economy. They are markers in historical processes that, since the late nineteenth century, involved the formation of social relations often organized by conceptual categories such as class, sect, nation, and gender. These social relations have constantly informed and constituted one another within particular material and historical contexts. Casa Árabe has organized this conference on “State, oil and war in the formation of Iraq,” given by Nida Alahmad, a professor of Middle East Politics and International Relations at the University of Edinburgh, with the cooperation of the bachelor’s degree program in International Relations at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM) and the bachelor’s degree program in Philosophy, Politics and Economics at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM). The event will be presented by Isaías Barreñada, a professor and the coordinator of the UCM bachelor’s degree program in International Relations. The event will be moderated by Olivia Orozco, Casa Árabe’s Training and Economics Coordinator. Nida Alahmad is a professor of Middle East Politics and International Relations at the University of Edinburgh. Prior to joining this university, she was a Marie Sklodowska-Curie Fellow at Ghent University, a post-doctoral researcher at Georgetown University and a visiting researcher and associate at the European University Institute. She earned her PhD from the New School for Social Research (New York). Some of her most notable recent publications include the chapter titled State, Oil, and War in the Formation of Iraq, in A Critical Political Economy of the Middle East and North Africa, edited by Joel Beinin, Bassam Haddad and Sherene Seikaly (Stanford University Press, 2020). She is currently working on finalizing her book manuscript State Matters: The State, its significance, its matters, and its experts in the case of Iraq. For decades, the development of International Relations that took place in Western countries had no correspondence in Spain due to the isolationism that dominated Spanish foreign policy, the country’s incomplete economic development and the little scientific and cultural openness that characterized the Franco era. However, the establishment of democracy first and the membership in the European Community later achieved Spain’s full participation in an international stage that underwent an intense process of globalization. The bachelor’s degree in International Relations attempts to provide a structured, multidisciplinary and comprehensive higher education to the international specialists increasingly and urgently needed by Spanish society and the rest of Europe. Bachelor’s degree program in Philosophy, Politics and Economics (UAM) This degree program promotes interdisciplinary thinking, viewed not as a series of isolated contents from a wide range of disciplines, but rather as the fostering of an atmosphere for authentic discussion, dialogue and integration of theoretical and empirical approaches which are necessarily complementary for both students and teachers. It provides a view of the social sciences from different perspectives, equipping students with the tools they need to analyze an increasingly global, complex and connected world. It is an inter-university degree with joint instruction by the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, the Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona, the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid and the Universidad Pompeu Fabra. Jornada sobre turismo halal

La revolución argelina: alcance y repercusión

En el marco de la conmemoración del 60 aniversario de la revolución argelina, Casa Árabe y la Embajada de Argelia organizaron, el 11 de noviembre de 2014, la conferencia "La revolución argelina: su alcance y su repercusión en la región y en el mundo", a cargo del escritor e historiador argelino Mohammed Larbi Zebiri. El acto fue presentado por Eduardo López Busquets, director general de Casa Árabe, y contó con la intervención de Mohammed Haneche, embajador de Argelia en Madrid. Mohammed Larbi Zebiri, historiador y escritor argelino (Argel, 1941), ha sido presidente de la Unión de los Escritores Argelinos y en la actualidad ocupa el cargo de presidente del Foro del pensamiento y de la cultura en Argelia. ¿Reforma constitucional o reforma de las instituciones?

Cuarta conferencia del ciclo "La reforma de las instituciones, a debate" celebrada el 30 de octubre de 2014 en la sede de Casa Árabe en Madrid. La mesa redonda contó con las intervenciones de Juan José Solozábal, catedrático de Derecho Constitucional, y Jorge de Esteban, catedrático de Derecho Constitucional, quienes fueron moderados por Benigno Pendás, director del Centro de Estudios Políticos y Constitucionales. El Foro de Córdoba

Presentación de "El Foro de Córdoba", celebrada el 27 de octubre de 2014 en la sede de Casa Árabe en Madrid, a cargo de Jacques Moreillon, vicepresidente de Exteriores de la Fundación Paradigma Córdoba. El Foro de Córdoba es un concepto propuesto por la Fundación Paradigma Córdoba y por las Autoridades de esta ciudad. Se fundamenta en el nexo que la conciencia universal establece entre Córdoba y un tiempo de tolerancia, en al-Andalus, entre las 3 grandes religiones monoteístas. El objetivo del Foro es reunir, año tras año en Córdoba, a un centenar de instituciones internacionales, que, cada una en su ámbito, contribuyen a hacer convivir ideales, esfuerzos y medios. La repetición de encuentros, temas e interlocutores en el mismo lugar, debe fructificar en un “espíritu de Córdoba”, red de buenas voluntades, y en una dinámica universal de promoción de la convivencia.

Proyecto "Medina Al Andalus"

Presentación del proyecto “Medina Al Andalus”, que tuvo lugar el 23 de octubre de 2014 en la sede de Casa Árabe en Madrid. Se trata de un proyecto de parque cultural temático para la unión y convivencia en paz de las tres culturas. Este proyecto, que dirige Manuel Saavedra, y en el que están involucrados profesionales de diferentes procedencias académicas y sociales, tiene prevista su construcción en el norte de Marruecos, concretamente en la región de Tánger. El acto fue presidido por Eduardo López Busquets, director general de Casa Árabe y contó con la intervención de Manuel Saavedra, director del proyecto Medina Al Andalus; María Jesús Viguera, catedrática del departamento de Estudios Árabes e Islámicos de la Universidad Complutense de Madrid; Rachid El Hour, profesor titular de Estudios Árabes e Islámicos de la Universidad de Salamanca; y Jorge Laguna, ingeniero y director de Ceta 2 ingenieros consultores.
