Taking place on November 18 at the Casa Árabe headquarters in Madrid is the seventh conference in the Aula Árabe Universitaria program, given by Professor Nida Alahmad (University of Edinburgh). Over the past few decades, three themes—the state, oil, and war—have shaped both Iraqi politics and Iraqi studies. These themes emerge from Iraq’s modern history and its representation in academia. Academic work on Iraq witnessed a number of shifts that can be traced to two interrelated factors: access to primary source material, and the political context of the time. This lecture will show how the state, oil, and war are interrelated themes rather than definitively bound categories that determine certain effects on Iraq’s political economy. They are markers in historical processes that, since the late nineteenth century, involved the formation of social relations often organized by conceptual categories such as class, sect, nation, and gender. These social relations have constantly informed and constituted one another within particular material and historical contexts. Casa Árabe has organized this conference on “State, oil and war in the formation of Iraq,” given by Nida Alahmad, a professor of Middle East Politics and International Relations at the University of Edinburgh, with the cooperation of the bachelor’s degree program in International Relations at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM) and the bachelor’s degree program in Philosophy, Politics and Economics at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM). The event will be presented by Isaías Barreñada, a professor and the coordinator of the UCM bachelor’s degree program in International Relations. The event will be moderated by Olivia Orozco, Casa Árabe’s Training and Economics Coordinator. Nida Alahmad is a professor of Middle East Politics and International Relations at the University of Edinburgh. Prior to joining this university, she was a Marie Sklodowska-Curie Fellow at Ghent University, a post-doctoral researcher at Georgetown University and a visiting researcher and associate at the European University Institute. She earned her PhD from the New School for Social Research (New York). Some of her most notable recent publications include the chapter titled State, Oil, and War in the Formation of Iraq, in A Critical Political Economy of the Middle East and North Africa, edited by Joel Beinin, Bassam Haddad and Sherene Seikaly (Stanford University Press, 2020). She is currently working on finalizing her book manuscript State Matters: The State, its significance, its matters, and its experts in the case of Iraq. Bachelor’s degree in International Relations (UCM) Research on the role-players, events and processes occurring within international society became detached from other social sciences after the end of World War I. For decades, the development of International Relations that took place in Western countries had no correspondence in Spain due to the isolationism that dominated Spanish foreign policy, the country’s incomplete economic development and the little scientific and cultural openness that characterized the Franco era. However, the establishment of democracy first and the membership in the European Community later achieved Spain’s full participation in an international stage that underwent an intense process of globalization. The bachelor’s degree in International Relations attempts to provide a structured, multidisciplinary and comprehensive higher education to the international specialists increasingly and urgently needed by Spanish society and the rest of Europe. Bachelor’s degree program in Philosophy, Politics and Economics (UAM) This degree program promotes interdisciplinary thinking, viewed not as a series of isolated contents from a wide range of disciplines, but rather as the fostering of an atmosphere for authentic discussion, dialogue and integration of theoretical and empirical approaches which are necessarily complementary for both students and teachers. It provides a view of the social sciences from different perspectives, equipping students with the tools they need to analyze an increasingly global, complex and connected world. It is an inter-university degree with joint instruction by the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, the Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona, the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid and the Universidad Pompeu Fabra. II Foro Elcano sobre Terrorismo Global “Transformaciones del terrorismo global”

Primera jornada del II Foro Elcano de Terrorismo Global, dedicado a "Las transformaciones recientes del terrorismo global" y organizado por el Real Instituto Elcano con la colaboración de Casa Árabe y la Embajada de Estados Unidos en España. Esta sesión tuvo lugar el 17 de noviembre de 2014 en Casa Árabe en Madrid. El acto fue presentado por Eduardo López Busquets, director general de Casa Árabe, y por Krishna R. Urs, ministro consejero de la Embaja da de los Estados Unidos en España. En la primera mesa de debate se dieron a conocer los resultados de la investigación de Carola García-Calvo, investigadora del Real Instituto Elcano, y Fernando Reinares, investigador principal para el área de Terrorismo Global del Real Instituto Elcano, titulada "Pautas de implicación entre condenados por actividades relacionadas con el terrorismo yihadista o muertos en acto de terrorismo suicida en España (1996-2013)". Siria: lucha geopolítica y catástrofe humanitaria en Oriente Medio

Casa Árabe y la Embajada de Países Bajos en Madrid organizaron, el 9 de diciembre de 2014 en Madrid, esta conferencia, que contó con la participación de Eduardo López Busquets, director general de Casa Árabe; Kees van Rij, Embajador de los Países Bajos en Madrid; Marcel Kurpershoek, embajador de los Países Bajos en Misión Especial para Siria; y John McHugo, escritor experto en Siria y Oriente Medio. Para tratar de entender el estado de la cuestión en Siria, es pertinente tener en cuenta los grandes intereses geoestratégicos que desde el siglo pasado han condicionado el devenir de Oriente Medio. Durante esta conferencia se hizo hincapié sobre algunos de estos aspectos y dos destacadas personalidades, Marcel Kupershoek, diplomático de los Países Bajos con amplia experiencia profesional en Oriente Medio, y el británico John McHugo, gran estudioso del mundo árabe y conocedor de Siria, ofrecieron su opinión sobre el tema. Homenaje a Alberto Elena

Casa Árabe dedica, durante los meses de diciembre de 2014 y enero de 2015, una programación especial a la memoria de Alberto Elena, catedrático de Comunicación Audiovisual en la Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, que colaboró estrechamente con Casa Árabe. Este primer acto de homenaje fue presentado por Eduardo López Busquets, director general de Casa Árabe y contó con la presencia de representantes del Instituto Cervantes, la Filmoteca Española, el Festival Cines del Sur, y el Festival de Cine Africano de Córdoba, entre otros. La debacle de Iraq

¿Unidad, federalismo, califato o partición? Varios expertos internacionales analizaron, el 3 de diciembre de 2014 en Madrid, cada una de las opciones. El acto contó con las intevenciones de Kawa Hassan, investigador de HIVOS y Carnegie Middle East Centre, Mohammad Ali Shabani, investigador de la Universidad de Cambridge, y Myriam Benraad, investigadora del Centre d'Études et de Recherches en Relations Internationales de Sciences Po (CERI); y estuvo moderado por Karim Hauser, responsable de Gobernanza de Casa Árabe. Esta conferencia se celebró en el contexto del seminario internacional "Iraq at a crossroads", organizado por Casa Árabe, Friedrich Ebert Stiftung y FRIDE. Hacia una solución justa: El reconocimiento del Estado palestino

Casa Árabe y la Misión Diplomática de Palestina en España organizaron, el lunes 1 de diciembre de 2014, esta conferencia, a cargo de Mohammed Barakeh, secretario general del partido Hadash. El acto contó además con las intervenciones de Mohammed Haneche, embajador de Argelia y decano de los embajadores árabes en España; de Musa Amer Odeh, embajador de la Misión Diplomática de Palestina en España, y Eduardo López Busquets, director general de Casa Árabe. La iniciativa palestina para su reconocimiento como Estado independiente ha cobrado ímpetu en Europa en las últimas semanas. A finales de octubre, Suecia se convirtió en el primer país miembro de la UE en reconocer el Estado palestino y entablar relaciones diplomáticas. Al mismo tiempo, el Parlamento español se ha sumado a los de Reino Unido e Irlanda y aprobó por unanimidad el 18 de noviembre una proposición de no ley en favor del reconocimiento de Palestina como Estado independiente. Se espera que una oleada de reconocimientos pueda desatascar el llamado proceso de paz y llevar a una solución justa. De los 193 estados miembros de las Naciones Unidas, 135 (69,9%) han reconocido el Estado de Palestina.
