Seminar: The Gulf and the Maghreb in uncertain times

On Monday 12 April, we offer in collaboration with Fundación Alternativas this seminar, which will bring together analysts with vast experience and knowledge from both sides of the Mediterranean, providing a platform to analyse the growing importance of relations between the GCC and the Maghreb states. Recent developments show that regional configurations and alliances within the Arab world cannot be taken for granted. While in the not so distant past the Maghreb and the Gulf were put in competition against each other, these last years have witnessed a greater involvement of Gulf countries in the Maghreb through an array of mechanisms and shifting patterns depending on specific contexts. Clear cases in point are the conflicting interests invading Libya’s politics and the normalization of relations between Morocco and Israel in line with the so-called Abraham Accords. In spite of cultural and historical links, and notwithstanding a shared Arab identity, both geography and conflicting geopolitical and economic concerns have kept these subregions apart from each other. However, the Gulf and Maghreb states share interests and concerns. Dynamics throughout the Mediterranean nowadays encompass events at both the subregional, regional and transcontinental level. States are confronted with a number of transnational and cross-regional phenomena, both at the macro and the micro-level. The international relations and economies of Maghreb countries are becoming more multifaceted, with more assertive African policies and the expansion of new trade relations as well as diversification of allies. Will they emulate the Gulf’s regional and global endeavors, leading to a showdown, or will pragmatism and conflict fatigue prevail? Will traditional fault lines shift and adapt to new threats and opportunities? How can domestic politics shape future events? Will the Maghreb become an arena for power competition and Gulf Arab rivalries? How will the GCC’s irregular dynamics affect the balance of power? Have other external powers a role to play? Will potential partnerships be able to translate into deeper strategic ties providing with new opportunities for institutions and societies? The seminar will gather analysts with vast experience and insight from both sides of the Mediterranean, providing a platform to analyze the increasing importance of relations between the GCC and the Maghreb states. Quinta conferencia del ciclo "La reforma de las administraciones, a debate", organizado por la Fundación Transición Española, la Universidad Internacional Menéndez Pelayo (UIMP) y Casa Árabe. La mesa redonda, celebrada el 24 de noviembre de 2014, contó con las intervenciones de Luis Martín Rebollo y Luis Cosculluela Montaner, catedráticos de Derecho Administrativo, quienes fueron moderados por Tomás Ramón Fernández, catedrático de Derecho Administrativo. The Algerian Revolution: Scope and Repercussions

Within the framework of the commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the Algerian revolution, Casa Árabe and the Embassy of Algeria jointly organized a conference on November 11, 2014, titled “The Algerian Revolution: Its scope and repercussions in the region and around the world,” given by Algerian writer and historian Mohammed Larbi Zebiri. The event was presented by Eduardo López Busquets, the General Director of Casa Árabe, and included the intervention of Mohammed Haneche, Algeria’s ambassador in Madrid. Mohammed Larbi Zebiri, an Algerian historian and writer (Algiers, 1941), was the President of the Union of Algerian Writers and currently holds the position of President of the Forum of Thought and Culture in Algeria.

Conferencia "El reconocimiento de Palestina como estado"

El politólogo Xavier Abu Eid ofreció el 20 de noviembre de 2014 en la sede de Casa Árabe en Madrid la conferencia "El reconocimiento del Estado de Palestina y sus implicaciones para el fin de la ocupación israelí". Xavier Abu Eid es licenciado en Ciencia política y tiene un máster en Diplomacia. Es asesor del equipo negociador palestino, a cargo de sus comunicaciones y ha participado en el proceso de ingreso de Palestina en la Organización de Naciones Unidas, así como en el reconocimiento del Estado de Palestina por parte de una serie de países latinoamericanos. También ha estado involucrado en todos los procesos de negociación desde Annapolis (2008) hasta la fecha. Ha representado a Palestina en una numerosos reuniones y eventos. Abu Eid estuvo a cargo de las comunicaciones para la visita del Papa Francisco a Palestina y es uno de los asesores más cercanos al negociador en jefe Saeb Erekat.

El islam imaginario

Natalia Andújar, directora de Educaislam, ofreció el 19 de noviembre de 2014 en Córdoba esta conferencia sobre la construcción de una imagen estereotipada del islam en la televisión española. Andújar fue presentada por Amira Kedier, coordinadora de Casa Árabe en Córdoba. En esta conferencia, Natalia Andújar se centró en la construcción mediática del odio a través de las series y programas de televisión que se ven en España. Entre Ur y Erbil: misiones arqueológicas en Iraq, ayer y hoy

Los arquitectos Pedro Azara y Marc Marín ofrecieron el 13 de noviembre de 2014 esta charla, que fue presentada por Eduardo López Busquets, director general de Casa Árabe. Los arquitectos esbozarán un relato de las primeras ciudades de la Historia: ciudades sumerias como Uruk –construida por el legendario Gilgamesh- y Ur –donde se hallaron las tumbas reales, con sacrificios humanos-, seguida de una historia de algunas grandes misiones arqueológicas, ayer (bajo mandatos coloniales) y hoy, destacando los problemas que surgen del encuentro entre pasado y presente, como se descubren en dos casos de estudio.
