Taking place on November 18 at the Casa Árabe headquarters in Madrid is the seventh conference in the Aula Árabe Universitaria program, given by Professor Nida Alahmad (University of Edinburgh). Over the past few decades, three themes—the state, oil, and war—have shaped both Iraqi politics and Iraqi studies. These themes emerge from Iraq’s modern history and its representation in academia. Academic work on Iraq witnessed a number of shifts that can be traced to two interrelated factors: access to primary source material, and the political context of the time. This lecture will show how the state, oil, and war are interrelated themes rather than definitively bound categories that determine certain effects on Iraq’s political economy. They are markers in historical processes that, since the late nineteenth century, involved the formation of social relations often organized by conceptual categories such as class, sect, nation, and gender. These social relations have constantly informed and constituted one another within particular material and historical contexts. Casa Árabe has organized this conference on “State, oil and war in the formation of Iraq,” given by Nida Alahmad, a professor of Middle East Politics and International Relations at the University of Edinburgh, with the cooperation of the bachelor’s degree program in International Relations at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM) and the bachelor’s degree program in Philosophy, Politics and Economics at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM). The event will be presented by Isaías Barreñada, a professor and the coordinator of the UCM bachelor’s degree program in International Relations. The event will be moderated by Olivia Orozco, Casa Árabe’s Training and Economics Coordinator. Nida Alahmad is a professor of Middle East Politics and International Relations at the University of Edinburgh. Prior to joining this university, she was a Marie Sklodowska-Curie Fellow at Ghent University, a post-doctoral researcher at Georgetown University and a visiting researcher and associate at the European University Institute. She earned her PhD from the New School for Social Research (New York). Some of her most notable recent publications include the chapter titled State, Oil, and War in the Formation of Iraq, in A Critical Political Economy of the Middle East and North Africa, edited by Joel Beinin, Bassam Haddad and Sherene Seikaly (Stanford University Press, 2020). She is currently working on finalizing her book manuscript State Matters: The State, its significance, its matters, and its experts in the case of Iraq. Bachelor’s degree in International Relations (UCM) Research on the role-players, events and processes occurring within international society became detached from other social sciences after the end of World War I. For decades, the development of International Relations that took place in Western countries had no correspondence in Spain due to the isolationism that dominated Spanish foreign policy, the country’s incomplete economic development and the little scientific and cultural openness that characterized the Franco era. However, the establishment of democracy first and the membership in the European Community later achieved Spain’s full participation in an international stage that underwent an intense process of globalization. The bachelor’s degree in International Relations attempts to provide a structured, multidisciplinary and comprehensive higher education to the international specialists increasingly and urgently needed by Spanish society and the rest of Europe. Bachelor’s degree program in Philosophy, Politics and Economics (UAM) This degree program promotes interdisciplinary thinking, viewed not as a series of isolated contents from a wide range of disciplines, but rather as the fostering of an atmosphere for authentic discussion, dialogue and integration of theoretical and empirical approaches which are necessarily complementary for both students and teachers. It provides a view of the social sciences from different perspectives, equipping students with the tools they need to analyze an increasingly global, complex and connected world. It is an inter-university degree with joint instruction by the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, the Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona, the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid and the Universidad Pompeu Fabra. Presentación del libro "Los templos de Millones de Años"

Casa Árabe presentó, el martes 24 de febrero de 2015 en Madrid, este libro en un acto en el que se hizo una descripción de las joyas encontradas en una tumba del Imperio Medio en Tebas. El acto contó con las intervenciones de Mª Carmen Pérez Díe, directora del departamento de Egiptología del Museo Arqueológico Nacional; Javier Martínez Babón, miembro del proyecto de excavación del templo de Millones de Años de Tutmosis III y autor de uno de los capítulos del libro; y Myriam Seco Álvarez, directora del proyecto de excavación del templo de Millones de Años de Tutmosis III, editora y autora de uno de los capítulos del libro. Presentación del informe Doing Business 2015 - África Subsahariana

Casa África y Casa Árabe organizaron, el martes 24 de febrero de 2015 en Madrid, la presentación del informe "Doing Business 2015: más allá de la eficiencia", una publicación insignia del Grupo del Banco Mundial. Se trata de la XII edición de la serie de informes anuales que miden los avances regulatorios que favorecen o restringen la actividad empresarial y los negocios. Las conclusiones del informe fueron presentadas por Augusto López-Claros, director del Departamento de Análisis e Indicadores Globales del Grupo Banco Mundial, quien centró su intervención en los resultados alcanzados en el mismo por los países de África. La lucha contra el terrorismo yihadista en Francia y Gran Bretaña

Frank Foley, profesor de Relaciones Internacionales del King's College de Londres, ofreció esta conferencia el 12 de febrero de 2015 en la sede de Casa Árabe en Madrid. La conferencia abordó los diferentes enfoques que Francia y Gran Bretaña han adoptado en la lucha contra el terrorismo "yihadista". Rastreando los orígenes históricos de sus políticas divergentes, Frank Foley examinó cómo el gobierno y la policía de ambos países interactúan con las comunidades musulmanas y destacó los desafíos que enfrenta el gobierno francés tras los recientes atentados en París. La morada de la no-morada: el legado vivo de Ibn Arabi en su 850 aniversario

El profesor Pablo Beneito, presidente de la sociedad MIAS-Latina ofreció el 9 de febrero de 2015 esta conferencia inaugural en Casa Árabe, que marca el comienzo de un año en el que Ibn Arabi tendrá un protagonismo muy especial. Fuepresentado por Eduardo López Busquets, director general de Casa Árabe. Ibn Arabi nació en Murcia el 28 de julio de 1165, por lo que el año 2015 será el año de su 850 aniversario. Con este motivo Casa Árabe se suma a la serie de eventos que la asociación de estudios de Ibn Arabi (MIAS Latina - Muyiddin Iban Arabi Society Latina) organiza durante todo el año para conmemorar el 850 aniversario del nacimiento de este místico sufí, pensador y poeta, que fue uno de los mayores maestros espirituales de la historia. Como es sabido, las obras de Ibn Arabi han tenido en todo el mundo islámico una enorme influencia, haciéndose extensiva a todo el mundo a lo largo del siglo pasado. 15 Aniversario de MEDOCC

Con motivo del 15 aniversario de MED-OCC, Casa Árabe organizó, el 4 de febrero de 2015 en su sede de Madrid, "Una travesía desde el Mediterráneo Occidental", un acto homenaje que contó con la intervención de varios profesionales del ámbito de trabajo de la asociación, así como con una pequeña intervención musical. Entre otras personas, intervinieron Eduardo López Busquets, director general de Casa Árabe; Guillermo Escribano, de la Dirección de Relaciones Culturales y Científicas de la AECID; Abdelkrim Ouassani, artista plástico y ex director de la Escuela de Bellas Artes de Tetuán; Luis Gordillo, artista; Emilio Rivas, arquitecto y presidente de MED-OCC; Ahmad Taheri, director del Centro Persépolis de Madrid; Federico Arbós, arabista y traductor; y Rosana Acquaroni, poeta y profesora de la Universidad Complutense de Madrid. El acompañamiento musical corrió a cargo del grupo TAKSIM, formado por: Hames Bitar (laúd), Javier Escaned (saxo) y María García Cameselle (contrabajo).
