Poems and revolutionary movements in the Arab world

Fourteenth conference in the program Aula Árabe Universitaria II, to be given by Francesca Corrao, a professor of Arabic language and culture (Luiss University of Rome). The event will be held on April 19, live on YouTube. After colonial rule, Arabs faced a season of hope, but other regional crises soon arose. The disillusionment of avant-garde Arab intellectuals caused by the Arab armies’ disappointing performance in the Six-Day War was subsequently worsened by the repressive policies of Arab governments. As a result, avant-garde poets gradually distanced themselves from their initial enthusiasm for the political achievements of their leaders and turned their attention back to the dramatic realities of their populations. The poets’ metaphors expressed the desires of the people. By doing this, and as a result of efforts by intellectuals, despite decades of repression and censorship, cultural debate kept young Arabs’ aspiration to see their rights and freedoms respected alive in their hearts. Thus, an echo of the revolts, filled with the hope that stirred Arab youth in 2011, still lingers in literature. In many Arab countries, when the uprisings turned into the tragedy of counter-revolution in the form of a savage wave of repression leading to civil wars, poets lent their voices once again to expressing disillusionments. This conference on “Poems and revolutionary movements in the Arab world” by Francesca Corrao, a professor of Arabic Language and Culture at Luiss University in Rome, will provide a few examples of poems which describe the unfolding of events and the heartbreak and pain over the loss of loved ones and places, in an attempt to inspire hope even where it was, and still is, difficult to imagine a better future. Casa Árabe has organized this fourteenth session in the event series Aula Árabe Universitaria 2 (AAU2), with the cooperation of the bachelor’s degree program in Semitic and Islamic Studies at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM). The session will be introduced by Victoria Khraiche Ruiz-Zorrilla, an associate professor of Arabic Language and Literature at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM), and will be moderated by Nuria Medina, Casa Árabe’s Coordinator of Cultural Programs Francesca Maria Corrao Francesca Maria Corrao is a tenured professor of Arabic Culture and Language at Luiss University of Rome’s School of Political Science, the director of the MISLAM Program (Master in Islamic Countries’ Economics and Institutions) at the same university’s School of Government. Prior to that, she was also a professor at the University of Naples “L’Orientale” (1996-2011) and a visiting professor at the École Pratique des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (2007), Fudan University (Shanghai 2017), Science Pò (Menton 2017/19), Cairo, Beirut, Amman, Cambridge and Oxford. Her academic work focuses on Arab and Islamic culture and history, and Mediterranean studies. Among other committees, associations and research groups, she is a member of the Editorial Board of the open access online journal Arabic and World Literature: Comparative and Multidisciplinary Perspectives and a member of the scientific committee of many other journals on Arabic culture and literature (Rivista Africa e Orienti, Semicerchio, ARABLIT, Journal of Arabic Literature, Dialoghi Mediterranei, journal of the Istituto Euro-Arabo). Seminar: The Gulf and the Maghreb in uncertain times

On Monday 12 April, we offer in collaboration with Fundación Alternativas this seminar, which will bring together analysts with vast experience and knowledge from both sides of the Mediterranean, providing a platform to analyse the growing importance of relations between the GCC and the Maghreb states. Recent developments show that regional configurations and alliances within the Arab world cannot be taken for granted. While in the not so distant past the Maghreb and the Gulf were put in competition against each other, these last years have witnessed a greater involvement of Gulf countries in the Maghreb through an array of mechanisms and shifting patterns depending on specific contexts. Clear cases in point are the conflicting interests invading Libya’s politics and the normalization of relations between Morocco and Israel in line with the so-called Abraham Accords. In spite of cultural and historical links, and notwithstanding a shared Arab identity, both geography and conflicting geopolitical and economic concerns have kept these subregions apart from each other. However, the Gulf and Maghreb states share interests and concerns. Dynamics throughout the Mediterranean nowadays encompass events at both the subregional, regional and transcontinental level. States are confronted with a number of transnational and cross-regional phenomena, both at the macro and the micro-level. The international relations and economies of Maghreb countries are becoming more multifaceted, with more assertive African policies and the expansion of new trade relations as well as diversification of allies. Will they emulate the Gulf’s regional and global endeavors, leading to a showdown, or will pragmatism and conflict fatigue prevail? Will traditional fault lines shift and adapt to new threats and opportunities? How can domestic politics shape future events? Will the Maghreb become an arena for power competition and Gulf Arab rivalries? How will the GCC’s irregular dynamics affect the balance of power? Have other external powers a role to play? Will potential partnerships be able to translate into deeper strategic ties providing with new opportunities for institutions and societies? The seminar will gather analysts with vast experience and insight from both sides of the Mediterranean, providing a platform to analyze the increasing importance of relations between the GCC and the Maghreb states. Presentation of the “Focus Africa 2023” plan (12:00h, Moncloa)

On Monday, March 29, the presentation of the “Focus Africa 2023” plan will be presided over by the President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez. The event will begin at 12:00 p.m. at the Moncloa Palace and will be attended by the President of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. Also attending the presentation will be the Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, Arancha González Laya; the the Republic of Senegal’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Senegalese Abroad, Aïssata SallTall; the President of the African Development Bank, Akinwumi Adesina, and the Managing Director of Elecnor, Rafael Martín de Bustamante Vega. Also intervening is the President of the Republic of Ghana, with the event brought to a close by the President of the Spanish Government. The entire event can be watched live on the Moncloa Palace website, as well as YouTube, in both Spanish and English. Le lundi 29 mars, aura lieu la présentation du plan "Focus sur l'Afrique 2023", présidée par le président du gouvernement, Pedro Sánchez. L'événement débutera à 12h00 au Moncloa Palace et se déroulera en présence du Président de la République du Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. La ministre des Affaires étrangères, de l'Union européenne et de la Coopération, Arancha González Laya, la ministre des Affaires étrangères et des Sénégalais de l'extérieur de la République du Sénégal, Aïssata SallTall, le président de la Banque africaine de développement, Akinwumi Adesina, et le PDG d'Elecnor, Rafael Martín de Bustamante Vega, participeront à la présentation. Una década de guerra en Siria: 10 años de emergencia humanitaria

El miércoles 24 de marzo, ofrecemos esta conferencia en colaboració con Médicos Sin Fronteras (MSF), con motivo del décimo aniversario del estallido del conflicto bélico en Siria. Desde el inicio de la guerra en Siria en 2011, las vidas de sus habitantes han estado amenazadas. 12 millones de sirios y sirias (la mitad de la población) se han visto obligados a huir del conflicto y dejar sus hogares, a menudo varias veces, convirtiendo esta situación en la mayor crisis de desplazamiento de este siglo. En la actualidad, muchas de estas personas todavía siguen desplazadas. Durante esta década, Médicos Sin Fronteras (MSF) ha brindado apoyo a personas necesitadas en diferentes zonas del país: donando suministros médicos, instalando hospitales y clínicas, y apoyando a remoto a instalaciones y redes de personal médicas en áreas en donde el acceso directo para organismos de asistencia se hace imposible. En la actualidad, MSF apoya al pueblo sirio tanto dentro de Siria como en varios países vecinos que acogen a refugiadas y refugiados. El próximo 24 de marzo, Casa Árabe y MSF organizan una charla para escuchar la experiencia y testimonio de los especialistas en ayuda humanitaria en Siria y mostrar el efecto de diez años de conflicto en la salud de una población civil perseguida, sitiada, bombardeada y, en definitiva, abandonada a su suerte. Sesión 1. ¿Qué es la sharia? Métodos, historia, tradición intelectual e instituciones.

El día 16 de marzo ofrecemos la primera sesión (doble) del ciclo que dedicamos a la sharia. Las conferencias correrán a cargo de Delfina Serrano Ruano, investigadora del CSIC, tendrán lugar de manera presencial en Córdoba (asistencia previa inscripción) y serán retransmitidas en directo en nuestros canales en las redes sociales. En estas dos sesiones se realizará un breve recorrido cronológico por la historia de la shari`a (o “charia”) desde los primeros tiempos del islam y de la predicación del profeta Muhammad hasta nuestros días. Se aclarará el significado de conceptos básicos como ley sagrada (shari`a), fiqh (jurisprudencia), siyasa shar`iyya (buen gobierno); qanun o derecho gubernamental y derecho codificado, madhhab (escuela legal), cadí, muftí, fetua, etc… Al mismo tiempo se identificarán fases y desarrollos intelectuales que, sin haber representado una ruptura drástica con el pasado, han resultado determinantes en la evolución del concepto y del papel de la shari`a a lo largo de la historia de las sociedades islámicas. Delfina Serrano Ruano es especialista en Estudios Árabes e Islámicos y Científica Titular del Instituto de Lenguas y Culturas del Mediterráneo y Próximo Oriente del CSIC. Su trabajo de investigación se centra en el estudio de la jurisprudencia islámica (fiqh), y su relación con otras ciencias religiosas islámicas como el kalam o teología discursiva, y el sufismo. Sus publicaciones abordan estos temas en su vertiente doctrinal y práctica, y en contextos socio-históricos concretos, incluyendo el período contemporáneo. Sus trabajos han aparecido en prestigiosas revistas académicas internacionales como Al-Qantara, Der Islam, Islamic Law and Society, Bulletin d’Études Orientales, Revue des mondes musulmans et de la Méditerranée, Journal of Women of the Middle East and the Islamic World (Hawwa), Journal of Middle East Women’s Studies, y en editoriales como el CSIC, Brill, Routledge, Oxford University Press, Harvard University Press, Brepols. Ha dirigido dos proyectos de investigación y una tesis doctoral. Forma parte del comité editorial de la revista Al-Qantara y ha dirigido hasta 2020 la serie editorial Estudios Árabes e Islámicos (CSIC).
