Poems and revolutionary movements in the Arab world

Fourteenth conference in the program Aula Árabe Universitaria II, to be given by Francesca Corrao, a professor of Arabic language and culture (Luiss University of Rome). The event will be held on April 19, live on YouTube. After colonial rule, Arabs faced a season of hope, but other regional crises soon arose. The disillusionment of avant-garde Arab intellectuals caused by the Arab armies’ disappointing performance in the Six-Day War was subsequently worsened by the repressive policies of Arab governments. As a result, avant-garde poets gradually distanced themselves from their initial enthusiasm for the political achievements of their leaders and turned their attention back to the dramatic realities of their populations. The poets’ metaphors expressed the desires of the people. By doing this, and as a result of efforts by intellectuals, despite decades of repression and censorship, cultural debate kept young Arabs’ aspiration to see their rights and freedoms respected alive in their hearts. Thus, an echo of the revolts, filled with the hope that stirred Arab youth in 2011, still lingers in literature. In many Arab countries, when the uprisings turned into the tragedy of counter-revolution in the form of a savage wave of repression leading to civil wars, poets lent their voices once again to expressing disillusionments. This conference on “Poems and revolutionary movements in the Arab world” by Francesca Corrao, a professor of Arabic Language and Culture at Luiss University in Rome, will provide a few examples of poems which describe the unfolding of events and the heartbreak and pain over the loss of loved ones and places, in an attempt to inspire hope even where it was, and still is, difficult to imagine a better future. Casa Árabe has organized this fourteenth session in the event series Aula Árabe Universitaria 2 (AAU2), with the cooperation of the bachelor’s degree program in Semitic and Islamic Studies at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM). The session will be introduced by Victoria Khraiche Ruiz-Zorrilla, an associate professor of Arabic Language and Literature at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM), and will be moderated by Nuria Medina, Casa Árabe’s Coordinator of Cultural Programs Francesca Maria Corrao Francesca Maria Corrao is a tenured professor of Arabic Culture and Language at Luiss University of Rome’s School of Political Science, the director of the MISLAM Program (Master in Islamic Countries’ Economics and Institutions) at the same university’s School of Government. Prior to that, she was also a professor at the University of Naples “L’Orientale” (1996-2011) and a visiting professor at the École Pratique des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (2007), Fudan University (Shanghai 2017), Science Pò (Menton 2017/19), Cairo, Beirut, Amman, Cambridge and Oxford. Her academic work focuses on Arab and Islamic culture and history, and Mediterranean studies. Among other committees, associations and research groups, she is a member of the Editorial Board of the open access online journal Arabic and World Literature: Comparative and Multidisciplinary Perspectives and a member of the scientific committee of many other journals on Arabic culture and literature (Rivista Africa e Orienti, Semicerchio, ARABLIT, Journal of Arabic Literature, Dialoghi Mediterranei, journal of the Istituto Euro-Arabo). Presentación de "Al-Tanki, tras las huellas de una mujer iraquí"

Casa Árabe y Ediciones del Oriente y del Mediterráneo presentan, el miércoles 1 de junio en Madrid, la obra más reciente de Alia Mamduh. El acto contará con la autora del libro Alia Mamduh, quien estará acompañada de su traductor y prologuista Ignacio Gutiérrez de Terán, profesor de Estudios Árabes e Islámicos de la Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. Esta sinfonía desconcertante de voces narrativas dispares nos arrastra en la búsqueda de Afaf, la pintora iraquí cuyas huellas se pierden en París. La escritora iraquí afincada en Francia desde hace décadas lleva tiempo experimentando con el idioma árabe, tratando de generar un modo peculiar de expresar su experiencia vital como mujer árabe exiliada que vuelve una y otra vez, paradójicamente, a su país natal. Escribiendo sobre la violencia, las dictaduras y las invasiones que la obligaron a marcharse; sobre la marginación que siguen sufriendo las mujeres en las ciudades y pueblos de Iraq a la sombra del poder omnímodo ejercido por el hombre, el padre, el hermano mayor o el gran líder militar, civil y religioso; o sobre la represión de las libertades básicas, empezando por la de expresión y terminando por la sexual. Todo ello aflora desde la primera página de este pormenorizado relato en torno a una familia iraquí y la calle donde se desenvuelven sus miembros, a despecho de un Bagdad que decae, lánguidamente… (de la presentación de Ignacio Gutiérrez de Terán) La novedad editorial Al-Tanki se complementa con la reedición de la novela anterior de Alia Mamduh, Naftalina, también publicada por Ediciones del Oriente y el Mediterráneo en el año 2000, en la que ya aparece su juego de sutileza, acidez y distorsión lingüística que a la vez confunde y descubre la experiencia trágica de millones de iraquíes forzados a dejar su tierra. II Jornada de Sensibilización: la convivencia intercultural, un reto en positivo

Casa Árabe acoge, el jueves 26 de mayo en Madrid, esta jornada organizada por la Fundación Ibn Battuta. En los últimos años, el repunte de ideologías xenófobas y las secuelas de la crisis económica han generado situaciones de segregación y repunte de actitudes racistas en muchos barrios de Madrid. De cara a prevenir y/o evitar conflictos de carácter racista y xenófobo, la Fundación Ibn Battuta promueve acciones que permitan impulsar e inspirar la cohesión social, la integración y la convivencia. Se trata de fomentar espacios de debate e interacción, en los que se pretende avanzar desde los diagnósticos de dificultades, al intercambio de experiencias y de propuestas positivas, donde la diversidad es una fuente de riqueza y de retos estimulantes que permiten a las sociedades maduras y democráticas crecer en un contexto de ciudadanía global. La Jornada de Sensibilización se desarrollará como un espacio de participación ciudadana, cuyo objetivo es visibilizar experiencias de empoderamiento intercultural desde diferentes ámbitos, propuestas para una sociedad intercultural no solo desde el plano académico, sino de la mano de acciones reales que ya se han puesto en marcha desde los servicios públicos. Nakba 74: a continuing catastrophe

On Monday, May 23, Yara Hawari and Itxaso Domínguez de Olazábal will be discussing the fragmentation of Palestinian society, its resistance and the role played by the international community, along with other issues, in Madrid. The month of May marks a significant point in the history of the Middle East. Seventy-four years ago, on May 15, 1948, the State of Israel declared independence over more than 80 percent of historic Palestine. Some 800,000 Palestinians were expelled in the process, while more than 400 Palestinian towns and cities were destroyed. This trauma is known as the Nakba (Arabic for "catastrophe"), but Palestinians also refer to al-Nakba al mustamirrah, the "continuing Nakba": beyond a historical event, it is an ongoing process of dispossession and ethnic cleansing. Palestinians, numbering some 14 million worldwide, remain in a situation dominated by colonialism and apartheid, where they are denied both their past and their future and where their present seems to condemn them to perpetual waiting. Understanding the current reality of the Palestinian people requires a nuanced view that takes into account both its historical and conjunctural dimensions and is able to connect its recent events with its historical context. In this round table, Yara Hawari and Itxaso Domínguez de Olazábal will address, from different perspectives, the fragmentation of Palestinian society, its resistance, the role of the international community and the importance of shared transnational struggles. The event will also include the presentation of the book Palestine: Occupation, colonization, segregation by Domínguez de Olazábal, published by Catarata. Karim Hauser, Casa Árabe's International Relations Coordinator, will moderate the event. Yara Hawari is a senior analyst at Al-Shabaka: The Palestine Policy Network. She completed her PhD in Middle East Politics at the University of Exeter in 2017, where she taught several undergraduate courses and remains an honorary research fellow. In addition to her academic work, which focused on indigenous studies and oral history, she is a frequent political commentator writing for several media outlets, including The Guardian, Foreign Policy, and Al Jazeera English. She is the host of the podcast Rethinking Palestine and in December 2021 published her first novel, The Stone House. Itxaso Domínguez de Olazábal is coordinator of the Middle East and North Africa Panel at Fundación Alternativas and associate professor in International Studies at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid. She has worked, among other projects, as a researcher at the London office of The U.S./Middle East Project, as well as at the European Parliament and the Delegation of the European Union in Egypt. She collaborates with several media, such as Público and El Periódico. She holds a PhD in Arab and Islamic Studies from the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid and is a researcher at TEIM (Taller de Estudios Internacionales Mediterráneos) at the same university.
