Nakba 74: a continuing catastrophe

On Monday, May 23, Yara Hawari and Itxaso Domínguez de Olazábal will be discussing the fragmentation of Palestinian society, its resistance and the role played by the international community, along with other issues, in Madrid. The month of May marks a significant point in the history of the Middle East. Seventy-four years ago, on May 15, 1948, the State of Israel declared independence over more than 80 percent of historic Palestine. Some 800,000 Palestinians were expelled in the process, while more than 400 Palestinian towns and cities were destroyed. This trauma is known as the Nakba (Arabic for "catastrophe"), but Palestinians also refer to al-Nakba al mustamirrah, the "continuing Nakba": beyond a historical event, it is an ongoing process of dispossession and ethnic cleansing. Palestinians, numbering some 14 million worldwide, remain in a situation dominated by colonialism and apartheid, where they are denied both their past and their future and where their present seems to condemn them to perpetual waiting. Understanding the current reality of the Palestinian people requires a nuanced view that takes into account both its historical and conjunctural dimensions and is able to connect its recent events with its historical context. In this round table, Yara Hawari and Itxaso Domínguez de Olazábal will address, from different perspectives, the fragmentation of Palestinian society, its resistance, the role of the international community and the importance of shared transnational struggles. The event will also include the presentation of the book Palestine: Occupation, colonization, segregation by Domínguez de Olazábal, published by Catarata. Karim Hauser, Casa Árabe's International Relations Coordinator, will moderate the event. Yara Hawari is a senior analyst at Al-Shabaka: The Palestine Policy Network. She completed her PhD in Middle East Politics at the University of Exeter in 2017, where she taught several undergraduate courses and remains an honorary research fellow. In addition to her academic work, which focused on indigenous studies and oral history, she is a frequent political commentator writing for several media outlets, including The Guardian, Foreign Policy, and Al Jazeera English. She is the host of the podcast Rethinking Palestine and in December 2021 published her first novel, The Stone House. Itxaso Domínguez de Olazábal is coordinator of the Middle East and North Africa Panel at Fundación Alternativas and associate professor in International Studies at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid. She has worked, among other projects, as a researcher at the London office of The U.S./Middle East Project, as well as at the European Parliament and the Delegation of the European Union in Egypt. She collaborates with several media, such as Público and El Periódico. She holds a PhD in Arab and Islamic Studies from the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid and is a researcher at TEIM (Taller de Estudios Internacionales Mediterráneos) at the same university. The Algerian Revolution: Scope and Repercussions

Within the framework of the commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the Algerian revolution, Casa Árabe and the Embassy of Algeria jointly organized a conference on November 11, 2014, titled “The Algerian Revolution: Its scope and repercussions in the region and around the world,” given by Algerian writer and historian Mohammed Larbi Zebiri. The event was presented by Eduardo López Busquets, the General Director of Casa Árabe, and included the intervention of Mohammed Haneche, Algeria’s ambassador in Madrid. Mohammed Larbi Zebiri, an Algerian historian and writer (Algiers, 1941), was the President of the Union of Algerian Writers and currently holds the position of President of the Forum of Thought and Culture in Algeria.

Conferencia "El reconocimiento de Palestina como estado"

El politólogo Xavier Abu Eid ofreció el 20 de noviembre de 2014 en la sede de Casa Árabe en Madrid la conferencia "El reconocimiento del Estado de Palestina y sus implicaciones para el fin de la ocupación israelí". Xavier Abu Eid es licenciado en Ciencia política y tiene un máster en Diplomacia. Es asesor del equipo negociador palestino, a cargo de sus comunicaciones y ha participado en el proceso de ingreso de Palestina en la Organización de Naciones Unidas, así como en el reconocimiento del Estado de Palestina por parte de una serie de países latinoamericanos. También ha estado involucrado en todos los procesos de negociación desde Annapolis (2008) hasta la fecha. Ha representado a Palestina en una numerosos reuniones y eventos. Abu Eid estuvo a cargo de las comunicaciones para la visita del Papa Francisco a Palestina y es uno de los asesores más cercanos al negociador en jefe Saeb Erekat.

El islam imaginario

Natalia Andújar, directora de Educaislam, ofreció el 19 de noviembre de 2014 en Córdoba esta conferencia sobre la construcción de una imagen estereotipada del islam en la televisión española. Andújar fue presentada por Amira Kedier, coordinadora de Casa Árabe en Córdoba. En esta conferencia, Natalia Andújar se centró en la construcción mediática del odio a través de las series y programas de televisión que se ven en España. Entre Ur y Erbil: misiones arqueológicas en Iraq, ayer y hoy

Los arquitectos Pedro Azara y Marc Marín ofrecieron el 13 de noviembre de 2014 esta charla, que fue presentada por Eduardo López Busquets, director general de Casa Árabe. Los arquitectos esbozarán un relato de las primeras ciudades de la Historia: ciudades sumerias como Uruk –construida por el legendario Gilgamesh- y Ur –donde se hallaron las tumbas reales, con sacrificios humanos-, seguida de una historia de algunas grandes misiones arqueológicas, ayer (bajo mandatos coloniales) y hoy, destacando los problemas que surgen del encuentro entre pasado y presente, como se descubren en dos casos de estudio.
